FIRST TEAM BOOST SURVIVAL HOPES

The first team are clawing their way back towards the other teams at the bottom of the Gwent County First Division following a 2-1 home win against 6th placed Undy Athletic, with a first half strike from Mike Davidge and a spectacular 84th minute volley from Tom Wise. Mark Taylor's team have now gained 10 points from their last five games (five times more than they'd amassed in all of their previous games this season).

Amateur Cup (Round 2) - Blaenavon Blues 3 Panteg 1

The first team travelled to Blaenavon to settle a cup tie that was originally scheduled for December 2nd and despite heavy rain in the 24 hours leading up to the game, the pitch was in a relatively good condition.

Blaenavon took the lead in the first quarter of the game on the break from a Panteg corner that led to Darren Harris rounding keeper Mark Eaves and slotting into an empty net. The visitors were level within ten minutes as Tom Wise hit a crisp left-footed free kick over the wall from 25 yards past Blues' keeper Lee Jones and into the bottom corner of the net.

As the teams emerged from the dressing rooms for the second half there was a noticable change in weather conditions as the wind had increased meaning Panteg found it difficult to get into their opponents' half for the whole of the second period.

Blaenavon created all the chances and cruised to a 3rd round tie at Villa Dino/Christchurch with a close range header from Neil Cox and another goal on the break for Darren Harris.

Injury forces abandonment to 1st team cup game

With the first two attempts to play this fixture postponed because of the weather and the third due to no officials being available, the first team travelled to Blaenavon Blues in an attempt to settle the tie for the fourth consecutive week.

Steve White gave Blaenavon the lead mid-way through the first half with Lee Gwilliam equalising before the break direct from a corner and both teams had great chances to net the winner in the second half. With ten minutes remaining the match was abandoned when Panteg midfielder Luke Whittam fell awkwardly in playing a pass down the wing, picking up a suspected broken leg.

Following a wait of over an hour for an ambulance to arrive with Luke in agony on a muddy pitch in near freezing conditions with rain falling, he was eventually taken to hospital.

Following scans and x-rays it appears that thankfully no bones were broken but Luke's calf muscle was torn, so he will be out of action for quite a while.

Blaenavon Blues' chairman Mike Hall sends Luke best wishes on behalf of the club for a speedy recovery and everyone at Panteg would like to thank all at Blaenavon for their help following this incident.

Regarding the cup tie, both sides will try again next weekend (29th) for the fifth time of asking.
